Pacific Hurricane Season Brings Tropical Storm to Little Italy?

Each year, the Pacific Hurricane Season begins on May 15 in the eastern Pacific Ocean and on June 1 in the central Pacific, with both ending on November 30. The National Weather Service of Mexico predicts 16 to 22 named storms and 7 to 11 major hurricanes to develop this 2023 season. These predictions are based on above-average sea surface temperatures across the eastern Pacific and the possibility of a strong El Niño developing.

The only recorded hurricanes to hit California occurred over 100 years ago. In 1854 a tropical cyclone system made landfall over northern California just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and in October of 1858 the San Diego hurricane passed very close to southern California. Although hurricanes have not made landfall in California recently, monsoonal moisture does travel north, bringing tropical storms to our region.
