Is Your Home in South Park Prepared for Wildfire Season?
7/5/2023 (Permalink)
With all the rain we have received this year comes more fuel for wildfire season. Our local Centre City/Uptown team urges North Park residents and businesses to take steps now to clear overgrown foliage and create defensible space around their properties.
The County of San Diego website says that defensible space around the home should be a 100-foot radius from any structure. You are not required to cross your property line to clear the 100 feet as the neighboring property owner may be required to clear the additional distance by the fire agency.
Additionally, the National Fire Protection Association suggests choosing fire-resistant building materials and limiting the amount of flammable vegetation in three home ignition zones.
- Trim branches that overhang the home, porch, and deck
- Prune branches of large trees up to 6 to 10 feet from the ground
- Remove plants containing resins, oils, and waxes
- Use crushed stone or gravel instead of flammable mulches o to 5 feet around the house
- Keep your landscape in good condition
