Hillcrest Locals Prepare for Disasters During National Preparedness Month?
9/5/2023 (Permalink)
For many years, our local Centre City/Uptown team has been responding to property damage emergencies in Hillcrest. September marks National Preparedness Month in our nation, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) rolls out awareness campaigns and community initiatives to create awareness of the need to be prepared for disasters and emergencies.
This year’s focus is on elderly populations and the unique needs this population faces when disasters strike. Additional resources will be posted on Ready.gov/older-adults in the coming weeks.
Addressing the specific needs and challenges faced by older adults enhances their resilience and reduces the negative impacts of emergencies on their lives. Older adults may face increased risks during disasters. They may take prescribed medications, utilize specialized medical equipment, or require specialized care, which can be disrupted during emergencies. Elderly populations are also more vulnerable to heat or cold-related illnesses, and dehydration. Adequate preparation ensures their unique needs are addressed and reduces the potential for adverse outcomes.
